Bad Wolf

Bad Wolf is a versatile UK band composed of Luke Peters and James Hayward. They produce ‘Electro, Dubstep, Drum N Bass, Indie, Hip Hop, and Acid’ style music, as they’ve described it. Whatever you want to call it, it’s pretty sick. Check out some of their songs below.

Datsik

Datsik, also known as Troy Beetles, is a Dubstep DJ and music producer from British Columbia, Canada. His first release was in the spring of 2009. Ever since then, he’s been making some sick original songs as well as going in on a lot of remixes. Check out this relatively new song from Datsik called Domino. It’s a chill song to just have going in the background if you’re trying to do work. Below that, listen to one of his more uptempo remixes if you’re in the mood to jump around.

Lonely Island Remixes

I’m sure you’ve heard of The Lonely Island. They’re a comedy group made of up Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer that does a lot of musical parodies. Recently, they just released a single called I Just Had Sex featuring Akon. If you haven’t heard it yet, pop over to youtube and listen to it. After you’re done there, listen to these two remixes, one a bit more of a trance remix and the other an electrohouse type deal. Either way, they’re pretty danceable.

Mac Miller

Mac Miller is another young rapper in the game. From the northeastern United States, he’s signed to Rostrum Records, the same label that picked up Wiz Khalifa. The majority of his songs are just perfect to play while you study or do other activities that require chill music.

For starters, check out this song off one of his 2010 mixtapes, K.I.D.S., called Senior Skip Day

Cold War Kids

The Cold War Kids is an indie rock band straight out of Long Beach California that released it’s third studio album Mine is Yours today.   The band worked with producer Jacquire King, who is responsible for albums by Modest Mouse, Kings of Leon, and a few others.  Cold War Kids combines punk with soul music to create a great sound.

Louder than Ever

This song is a great sample of the new album.  The catchy course echoed in my head long after my first listen, and I was completely okay with it.

Destroyer

Destroyer’s new album Kaputt sounds like what would happen if you turned to a jazz radio station while listening to indie rock at the same time.  Throw in some synths reminiscent of the 80’s and the fusion is complete.  Dan Bejar, the man behind the scenes, laces lyrics that sometimes seem as eclectic as the instrument choices.  If you’re interested in a sound most people probably haven’t cared to try then check out this album.

Kaputt

Kaputt is at the forefront of the album and is a hazy combination of jazz and an 80’s feel that meshes surprisingly well.  The words “chasing cocaine” sum up the song in a nutshell but in a melodic and soothing feel.

Chinatown

This song is even more soothing than Kaputt.  The smooth synths and acoustic guitar mold together perfectly with Bejar’s drowsy voice.  The horn riffs in the background make the song feel rich and full while all the while remaining completely relaxed.

Blue Scholars

Blue Scholars is a rap due based out of Seattle that focuses on lyrics that concentrate on social issues.  Listening to their songs brings you straight to the street corners and creates an aura of socially driven lyrics over the gaudy mainstream of hip hop.  This music inspires contemplation perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

Lumiere

This song slowly grows throughout the duration to create a captivating feeling to compliment the great lyrics.

Byani

Byani has a mellow tune and the lyrics are all about social situations.  The song has some blues influence and adds to the whole flavor of the voice of the lyrics.

Cake

You all know who they are.  The alternative rock band out of California with half-spoken lyrics is at it again with a new album released yesterday called “Showroom of Compassion.”  This is the band’s first studio release since 2004 and is as unique as ever.  Sticking to their famous style Cake uses a variety of instruments, engaging lyrics, and basically just has as much fun as they always have.

Sick of You

Sick of You” is no surprise to traditional Cake fans.  A catchy tune filled with great guitar and bass lines, trumpets, and keyboards.   The lyrics grab your attention as they are nearly spoken as always, creating a pleasant contrast with the hook.  Classic Cake.

How do you think this song compares to the beloved Cake of the 90s?

James Blake

James Blake is a young London native with a striking voice and a style that most people aren’t used to.  He has roots in the dubstep scene and is poised to release his first album soon.  Blake utilizes piano tunes and seemingly eclectic electronic rythms to create slow meaningful melodies.

Limit to Your Love

Blake’s first single “Limit to Your Love” is a slow emotional song that emphasizes his unique vocal abilities and dubstep background.  Turn your bass up and be ready to empathize with this guy as you watch the mournfully lonely video.

What do you think of this guy’s unique sound?
