Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog is a psychedelic rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each member of the band has a nickname, as do the friends of the band. Their version of pop-rock is reminiscent of the 1960s, a time period they draw a lot of their inspiration from. You can catch them tonight at Higher Ground in Burlington, VT. Tickets and info here.

Sleigh Bells

Sleigh Bells is composed of an American duo based out of Brooklyn, New York. They formed in 2008 and released their debut album, Treats, in May of 2010 and featured an eclectic mix of their work. Their blend of noise pop is great for those times when you just feel like you want to rage or even when you just need to something to drown out those crazy thoughts.

N.E.R.D.

N.E.R.D. is an incredible fusion of funk, hip hop, and rock music courtesy of  Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo.  The band (No one Ever Really Dies) has been around since 2001 and released their latest album Nothing in 2010.  Pharrell’s sensual voice adds the funk to the entertaining guitar riffs and rock and roll style drums.  The sound is a great change of pace from the hip hop on the radio but keeps the same edge.

Things are Getting Better

This song is perfect for any day and any mood.  The care-free attitude of the band shines through and the song is simply just incredibly fun to listen to.  Fast paced drums and a little jazz guitar can make anybody feel better.

Backseat Love

The name of this track is pretty self-explanatory.  The sensuality is displayed and is enough to put you in the mood by the end of the song.

Destroyer

Destroyer’s new album Kaputt sounds like what would happen if you turned to a jazz radio station while listening to indie rock at the same time.  Throw in some synths reminiscent of the 80’s and the fusion is complete.  Dan Bejar, the man behind the scenes, laces lyrics that sometimes seem as eclectic as the instrument choices.  If you’re interested in a sound most people probably haven’t cared to try then check out this album.

Kaputt

Kaputt is at the forefront of the album and is a hazy combination of jazz and an 80’s feel that meshes surprisingly well.  The words “chasing cocaine” sum up the song in a nutshell but in a melodic and soothing feel.

Chinatown

This song is even more soothing than Kaputt.  The smooth synths and acoustic guitar mold together perfectly with Bejar’s drowsy voice.  The horn riffs in the background make the song feel rich and full while all the while remaining completely relaxed.

Cake

You all know who they are.  The alternative rock band out of California with half-spoken lyrics is at it again with a new album released yesterday called “Showroom of Compassion.”  This is the band’s first studio release since 2004 and is as unique as ever.  Sticking to their famous style Cake uses a variety of instruments, engaging lyrics, and basically just has as much fun as they always have.

Sick of You

Sick of You” is no surprise to traditional Cake fans.  A catchy tune filled with great guitar and bass lines, trumpets, and keyboards.   The lyrics grab your attention as they are nearly spoken as always, creating a pleasant contrast with the hook.  Classic Cake.

How do you think this song compares to the beloved Cake of the 90s?

The Black Keys

The Black Keys have been around since 2001 and just released their sixth studio album Brothers recently and performed on SNL last weekend.  Known for their blues rock style, the duo has a grounded garage rock sound that is easy and fun to listen to.  Grab some dark shades, a bass guitar, and you’ll find where these guys are coming from.

Next Girl

The strong blues background makes itself known in this track.  Simple meaningful lyrics over a hard bass line and drums is all you really need.

Tighten Up

Tighten Up is the most prominent single of the new album and remains centered in the blues roots of the band. This song has everything including catchy guitar riffs and organ accompaniment carried this song to the top.

The Love Song —K os

I guess Canada is good for something, this rapper/producer out of Toronto uses a variety of genres from rap to reggae to convey his lyrically based music.  K os (pronounced chaos) focuses on a positive message and frequently criticizes mainstream hip hop for being too centered on money and violence.
Here We Go —Chiddy Bang
